A gang rape, that shakes up the nation

A gang rape, that shakes up the nation

On Sunday night (16.12.2012), a 23-year-old woman was gang raped in a moving chartered bus and dumped near the Mahipalpur flyover on NH-8, Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. Acting on a tip off the police arrested all the accused within 24 hours of incident and had produced before the court. The Delhi High Court has taken the ‘suomotu’ of the case and asked the Delhi Police Commissioner to submit a report, at the time of incident, what the police force were doing?

The incident has shaken up the nation, right from the Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh. The political fraternity to student community to women forum, everybody has condemned the heinous, barbaric and cowardice act of those involved in it. Again, it has shown that the national capital ‘DELHI’ is not a safer place for women. Every now and then we get to hear about such a shocking incident.

As an active participant of such issues I paid a visit to India Gate, where large numbers of angered and agitated crowd were gathered on Wednesday to protest against the rapists and demand for capital punishment to all the accused. Since a long time, such demand was being raised but no government has paid any attention towards it and subsequently a number of rape and gang rape takes place, one after another. All of them were demanding for ‘death penalty’ but the question is does it solve the purpose? As we all know that there is a provision of death penalty for committing murder, the question here arises does the number of murder incidents come down? Everyone, even a lay man knows that the consequence to murder anybody is capital punishment. Even then the people commit such crimes.

The intellectual class will have to find the root cause of the problem, that why an individual or gang involved themselves into such a barbaric act. Many of intellects said that the arrogance and money are the reason for this kind of crime. But after looking this incident I don’t think money has anything to give and take with it. As far as arrogance is concerned, it can be thinkable once but why?

If we look at the maximum number of rape cases we get to know that the rapists were not in normal state of mind. They did after consuming alcohol and sedatives materials. So if this is the case then why the government does not banned it. Life of a human being is more important or the revenue generation from selling of these products? We need to think on it and have to develop a mechanism, so that it could be prevented further.

In parliament, almost every opposition and ruling party had asked for capital punishment for the rapists with an immediate effect. It is good that, for the first time, the entire parliamentarian stood up against such a brutal crime and came out in support of victim, who is battling with her life at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. All we can say that the girl was not raped it was humanity who was raped inhumanely.

The incumbent government must ensure and build a sense of confidence in its citizens by providing better safety and security. Otherwise days are not far and one day the national capital would become a ‘migrant capital’. The people would start migrating from here in order to live their better, safer and peaceful life. The government needs to take a lesson from this incident.
